College Grove TN Weekend Farm Stands for Saturday Mornings

Ask anyone outside Williamson County to describe College Grove and you'll get the same three words back: golf, horses, gates. The Grove's Greg Norman course. Troubadour's Fazio track and its mandatory membership. Hundreds of horse farms tucked into the hills off Highway 31A. That is one part of College Grove, alongside its working farms.

Two working farms and a deli counter add another rhythm to a College Grove Saturday. Delvin Farms has been growing vegetables on the same 220 acres along the Harpeth River since 1972. Hatcher Family Dairy has been milking cows on Arno Road since 1831. Both predate every gate and clubhouse in College Grove by decades, in Hatcher's case by nearly two centuries. The farms offer a longstanding part of College Grove's schedule alongside its golf calendar.

The Barn That Runs Two Systems at Once

Hatcher Family Dairy has been milking in the same traditional barn for more than 75 years. In 2024, the family installed a Lely robotic milking system, and now both operate side by side, the old barn and the machine that's changing how dairy farms function everywhere. It's a small detail, but it's the kind that tells you this isn't a farm posed for photographs. It's a business six generations deep that's still deciding how to run itself.

The self-guided tour walks you through both sides of that decision. You move through the Creamery, where the farm's own milk becomes the products sold in its store, into the Milk Barn Museum for the family's history and College Grove's alongside it, then into a Robot Viewing Room where you can actually watch the Lely system work a herd without waiting for a scheduled milking time. Kids get a play loft with a view down into the barn. None of it requires booking ahead the way the school field trips do. You show up during store hours and walk the route yourself.

The farm store keeps its own schedule: open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday until 1 p.m., closed Sunday. The milk, the chocolate milk in particular, and the ice cream made on site now reach more than 90 vendors across Middle Tennessee, so most people in the region have tasted Hatcher's product without knowing it came from this particular stretch of Arno Road. The farm has also become a small streaming footnote, with a season documenting the operation now streaming on Disney+, and it rents out two Airbnb units on the property if you want to stay longer than a store visit allows.

Delvin Farms and Its Regional Markets

Delvin Farms operates on a different clock. Hank and Cindy Delvin started the operation in 1972, and it stayed a conventional produce farm for its first quarter century, selling into distribution centers and grocery chains. In 1997 they began converting to organic practices, and by 1998 the farm was certified. Today it grows more than 50 varieties of vegetables across the seasons, from spring strawberries and greens through summer tomatoes and melons into fall's squash and turnips, and sells through a CSA program alongside its own farm store on Cox Road.

The store keeps a tighter window than Hatcher's: closed Monday, open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Wednesday stretched to 6 p.m. Wednesday is also the day the farm just added a stall at the newly established Arrington Farmers Market, which means the same afternoon the store stays open longest is the afternoon the family is also running a second table a short drive away. It's the kind of small operational stretch that shows a 50-year-old farm still finding new places to sell.

Delvin's produce doesn't stay in College Grove. The farm sells at the producer-only markets in 12 South, East Nashville, Hip Donelson, Franklin, and Forest Hills. So the tomatoes on a table at the Forest Hills farmers market, or the peppers sold at 12 South, were very likely grown on the farm's acreage. College Grove isn't just adjacent to those neighborhoods. It's feeding them.

Line the two schedules up and the pattern is obvious once you see it: both stores go dark on Sunday. If your image of a farm weekend in College Grove includes a lazy Sunday drive to the dairy, you'll find the gate closed. The two stores overlap in their Tuesday-through-Saturday hours, and both are closed Sunday.

Breakfast at Country Market & Deli

Before either farm opens, Country Market & Deli on Horton Highway is a breakfast stop for farmers and longtime families. It's a gathering place for regulars before visits to the farms.

• Start at Country Market & Deli for breakfast among the regulars
• A few minutes down Horton Highway, or over to Arno Road, for Hatcher Family Dairy's self-guided tour and store
• Cross to Cox Road for Delvin Farms, timing it for Tuesday through Saturday hours
• Loop home by way of the Natchez Trace Parkway, which cuts through the southern end of Williamson County and turns the drive itself into part of the morning rather than just the transportation between stops

College Grove's golf courses and gated communities sit alongside a long agricultural history.
